As used by Gramsci, hegemony refers to the capitalist class ruling through dominating popular culture and ideology—and that the working class and oppressed need to reverse this, so that liberatory culture and ideology becomes the “common sense” of the popular classes. Hegemony can also be used with authoritarian implications (Wayne Price).
