Libertarian in the anarchist usage basically means supporting liberty over authority. The word “libertarian”, prior to the 1970s and outside the USA, was a very broad term applied to leftists and often used interchangeably with terms like “anarchist” or “socialist”. Today, there is right wing libertarians, who do not accept a definition of “liberty” or “freedom” which does not include the protection of private property rights. In turn, they do not believe in the total abolition of the state, but hold that it should exist solely to enforce property rights and contracts over property.
