Paternalism is the interference of a state or an individual with another person or group of people, against the latter’s will. Western paternalism in particular is a feature of colonialism that removes Indigenous peoples’ ability to self-determine their lives, and justified by the claim to “protect them from harm”, or “knows what’s good for them”.
